Tesla is a Silicon Valley company focused on designing, producing, manufacturing and selling high performance cars that run exclusively on electricity. The company was founded in 2003 and named after Nikola Tesla, the inventor of alternating current. Envisioned by Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning and PayPal founder Elon Musk, Tesla Motors has also as investors the founders of Google, Sergey Brin, Jeff Skoll and Larry Page. It is currently the only automaker building and selling a zero-emission sports car in serial production. Tesla has partnerships with two other automakers, Daimler and Toyota. Tesla also works closely with Panasonic as a strategic partner in battery cell research and development.

Since its birth, Tesla Motors had a few changes in its board. In 2007, Michael Marks, as an interim CEO replaced Martin Eberhard. Later that year, Ze’ev Drori was nominated as the permanent CEO, firing 10% of the Tesla workforce in the following year, to try to control the costs of production of the company. Still in 2008, Elon Musk (PayPal founder) became the CEO, leaving Drori the vice-chairman position. Tesla Motors' first production vehicle, the Tesla Roadster, is an all-electric sports car which uses Lithium Ion battery. Tesla announced in January 2011 that it had delivered more than 1500 Roadsters in at least 30 countries. Tesla also has the Roadster Sport, a higher performance sports car based on the Roadster.

Tesla and Daimler have also confirmed that Tesla is building electric powertrain components for an electric version of the Mercedes A-Class, the luxury brand's most affordable car. The electric version of the popular hatchback will be hitting the market and delivered to customers soon. They are also planning to build electric family-sized minivans, electric SUV crossovers, and electric fleet vans for municipal governments. The utility van and cabriolet are expected to be based on the Tesla Model S platform, along with the Tesla Model X crossover SUV. The company Tesla Motors has good and futurist ideas. It is an automobile company which run vehicles on alternate source of fuel other than oil and one can hope for it to do well. And bring a revolution in the way people think to protect the environment but in India it has competition with companies making EVs already at cheaper costs.
